The Defense Department released this news last week that US Northern Command would be getting a new commander soon, upon approval by Congress.
Navy Vice Adm. James A. Winnefeld Jr. for appointment to the rank of admiral and assignment as commander, Northern Command/Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Winnefeld is currently serving as director, strategic plans and policy, J-5, and as senior member, United States Delegation to the United Nations Military Staff Committee, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.
Winnefeld has been working closely with USD Policy Michele Flournoy in his current position on recent defense issues such as Teh Surge 2.0 in Afghanistan and the ballistic missile defense of Europe. He also has advocated that the US government be prepared to protect Israel from big, bad Iran. He'll be the second Navy appointment to NORTHCOM out of the four commanders that this command has seen. I'm just glad that it isn't a National Guard four-star, as had been predicted earlier. We really don't need the independent, fifth service branch to get a bigger head. The Deputy Commander will continue to be a National Guard general officer, I am sure, and life will go on as it has.

Interesting, all these sailors getting MACOMs, and largely land-based MACOMs at that. CENTCOM and now this. Hmmm...
