President Obama has hit the "go" button to begin escalating the troop strength in Afghanistan by more than 30,000. Now for the rest of today and through tomorrow, you will hear from retired general officers and Republican politicians and right-wing pundits about how this was a Good Decision, and how it shows that Democrats are still not good national security experts. You will not hear from Democrats or critics of the decision until the end of the week.
It's a prediction. I hope I'm wrong, but just saying. Here are a few more predictions - NATO will not meet the goal of adding 5,000 more troops to the mix over the next year. The Karzai government will continue to wallow in corruption and drug money. And if Obama does not start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and still has more than 50,000 troops in Iraq by mid-2010, he can kiss his Democratic majority in the House and Senate good-bye.
