A Breeze from the Cold War

Tu160_01 The Russians are threatening to deploy Tu-160 supersonic bombers in Cuba in retaliation for the US government's deployment of missile defense systems in Europe. It's not exactly quid pro quo, is it? Well, US military leadership wasted no time in responding, even though this may be a non-story.

"I certainly would offer best military advice that we should engage the Russians not to pursue that approach," [Gen. Norton] Schwartz told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"And if they did, I think we should stand strong and indicate that that is something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America."

Russian Defense Ministry officials have tried to pour cold water on the report, saying the newspaper story was written under a false name and quoted a source at an organization that did not exist.

Yes, if only we had a few squadrons of F22s or F35s ready to swarm out from Florida... But isn't this fun? It's almost like the 1960s again... Look out for the big Russian bear, my friends. The woods are getting dangerous again.

A nember of messages from the Russians in that one, aren't there. They didn't authorise it, but it still allows them to put their toes in the water to see if the fish will bite- and they've discovered they will, so the Russians naturally will say the article is unauthorised now.
